Horses compete in National Hunt races for a variety of reasons. The main reason is to test their jumping ability. They must learn to jump over obstacles without touching them and do so with the same action as a show jumper. Timber hurdles, for example, give way if hit too hard, so they may not be the best obstacle for a horse with an unorthodox jumping style.
